Description: The 2016 Triple Crown is a series of three races, the 10 furlong Grade I Kentucky Derby the first Saturday in May, this year it is May 7th, at Churchill Downs, the 9.5 furlong Grade I Preakness Stakes at Pimlico two weeks later on May 21st, and the 12 furlong Grade I Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park three weeks later on June 11th. The Triple Crown is open to all 3 year old horses, however, there is a Kentucky Derby Points System that in designated races the first four finishers are awarded Derby Points. The 20 horses who earn the most points will earn a berth into the starting gate for the Kentucky Derby. The Point System means that fillies must race against the boys to earn Derby Points.
