Description: Tapiture (KY) CH , C, foaled May 3, 2011 (Tapit - Free Spin, by Olympio) got a dream trip along the rail and went on to score in the 1 1/16 miles $300K Grade III Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park February 17, 2014. Jockey Ricardo Santana, Jr. broke Tapiture well from the inside post and maintained his rail position as the field stayed a bit wide going into the Clubhouse turn. Tapiture was able to get up along the inside of Tanzanite Cat after a half mile and then took the lead heading into the far turn. From there Santana kept Tapiture to his task and as they hit the top of the land he was drawing clear as Strong Mandate tried to make a race of it. Tapiture was simply too good for this field, he won by 4 1/4 lengths. Strong Mandate was 6 lengths in front of Ride On Curlin in 3rd. Tapiture also won the Grade II Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes November 30, and he got 3rd in the Grade III Iroquois September 7 last year, both at Churchill Downs. All three of these races were Kentucky Derby Prep Season races, Tapiture has accumulated 22 points towards a Kentucky Derby start and sits alone at the top of the leader board. Tapiture's race record is 2-1-2 from 5 starts and he has earned $320,838. He is a homebred of Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC and he is being trained by Steven Asmussen. Drawing by Daily Racing Funnies ®.
