Description: Melatonin (KY) B, G, foaled May 9, 2011 (Kodiak Kowboy - Yanquee Reign, by Yankee Victor) jumps into the Breeders' Cup Classic with a game victory in the 10 furlong $500K Grade I Gold Cup At Santa Anita June 25, 2016. Jockey Joe Talamo and Melatonin broke alertly and tracked the pace set by Lieutenant Colonel as they raced around the first turn and up the back stretch. Hard Aces and Win The Space were up close from the start in third and fourth. As they went into the far turn Melatonin moved up to engage Lieutenant Colonel, Win The Space would make it three across the track, however, that one eased back a bit as Melatonin did engage the leader, went by him at the quarter pole, and then was joined by Win The Space as they raced down the stretch. Melatonin and Win The Space battled for the lead, however, Melatonin started to pull clear inside the 1/16th marker to win by 1 1/2 lengths. Hard Aces saved all the ground around the far turn, angled outside for the drive and continued willingly missing the place by 3/4 lengths. Melatonin won the Big Cap at Santa Anita in March then finished a length behind Effinex in the Oaklawn Handicap at OP in April. He is now 5-3-3 from 13 starts and he has earned $1,218,552. The Gold Cup is a Breeders' Cup World Championships Challenge Series 'Win and You're In' race and Melatonin will get his starting fees paid for to contest the 2016 BC Classic November 5th at Santa Anita. Melatonin was bred by S. D. Brilie and he is owned by Susan Osborne's Tarabilla Farms. He is being trained by David Hofmans. Drawing by Daily Racing Funnies ®.
