Jockey Mike Smith aboard Gabriel Charles had to take back after being squeezed at the break. Big Cazanova set out to set the pace down the stretch for the first time and around the Clubhouse turn as Midnight Storm pressed him up the backstretch. Gabriel Charles found himself traveling easily along the inside towards the rear. He stayed that course around the far turn and angled to the outside when he entered the stretch. Twentytwentyvision was tracking the pace around the far turn along the inside. Midnight Storm hit the front turning for home and Twentytwentyvision came off the rail to go between horses and took over as they straightened for home. However, Gabriel Charles came with a rush along the outside and went on to win by 3 3/4 lengths. Finnegans Wake came along late 1 1/2 lengths further back for the show. Gabriel Charles had a long layoff after his second place finish in the Grade II Twilight Derby at Santa Anita November 1, 2013 to recover from his bowed tendon. He came back earlier this year to run a distant 2nd to Midnight Storm in an AOC (no tag) in April at Santa Anita. He then ran a close up 3rd to Bal A Bali and Talco in the Grade III American Stakes at Santa Anita in May. Gabriel Charles is now 4-4-1 from 11 starts and he has earned $584,400 for his owners Sam Britt and Michael House. He was bred by Doris E. Tummillo and he is being trained by Jeff Mullins.
