Description: Chitu (KY) CH , C, foaled March 18, 2011 (Henny Hughes - Sea Gift, by A.P. Indy) stalked the pacesetter and fought off stable mate Midnight Hawk to win the 1 1/8 miles $800K Grade III Sunland Derby at Sunland Park March 23, 2014. Garen set the pace into the far turn with Chitu and Midnight Hawk waiting to pounce. Midnight Hawk ranged up on the far outside and Chitu was racing between horses. Garen had nothing left at the quarter pole and Midnight Hawk and Chitu were set down for the drive. Jockey Martin Garcia went to work aboard Chitu and they proved best down the lane to draw off by 2 1/4 lengths over Midnight Hawk. It was 4 3/4 lengths further back to Commissioner who got up for 3rd. Chitu earned 50 points (54 total) towards his date with destiny in the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby for his victory and moved his lifetime earnings to $501,800. His race record now stands at 3-1-0 in 4 starts. Chitu was bred by Tom Evans, Macon Wilmil Equines & Marjac Farms and he is owned by the Tanma Corp. Bob Baffert is the trainer.
