Description: California Chrome (CA) CH , C, foaled February 18, 2011 (Lucky Pulpit - Love the Chase, by Not For Love) won his 4th stake race in a row with a sparkling victory in the 1 1/8 miles $1 million Grade I Santa Anita Derby at Santa Anita Park April 5, 2014. Regular rider Victor Espinoza was aboard for California Chrome's 2nd Graded Stakes race in row and they are destined to race in the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby. California Chrome earned 100 points in the Santa Anita Derby to bring his total points earned to 150; he sits firmly at the top of the Leaderboard. California Chrome chased front runner Dublin Up out of the Clubhouse turn and down the backstretch as Candy Boy set up a nice stalking position in 3rd to their outside. Heading into the far turn Candy Boy tried to gain ground on California Chrome but just at that point the later had accelerated to take the lead. Hoppertunity was gaining nicely on the rail and looked to be a threat, however the rider decided to take his mount outside of the tiring Dublin Up. Dublin Up blew the elbow and drifted wide turning for home and he took Hoppertunity with him. California Chrome stayed his path just 3 from the rail and when he straightened for home he had a 4 length advantage. He drew off as much the best, winning by 5 1/4 lengths over Hoppertunity in 2nd. It was 3 1/2 lengths further back to Candy Boy in 3rd. California Chrome has now won 6 of 10 starts and he has earned $1,134,850. He is owned and bred by Perry Martin & Steve Coburn and he is trained by Art Sherman. Drawing by Daily Racing Funnies ®.
