Description: Will Take Charge (KY) CH , C, foaled April 13, 2010 (Unbridled's Song - Take Charge Lady, by Dehere) made a determined effort to get into contention into the far turn in the 1 1/16 miles $600K Grade II Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park March 16 2013. Jockey Jon Court took him wide around the bend and edged closer to Oxbow who had surged to the lead turning for home. Under Mike Smith, Oxbow was running for the wire as Will Take Charge relentlessly gave pursuit and caught him late to win by a head. It was 2 lengths further back to Den's Legacy in 3rd. Hall of Fame trainer D Wayne Lukas broke into the National spotlight, again, with Hightail with a victory in the 2012 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Sprint at Santa Anita Park. Lucas then pops up with Derby hopeful Oxbow January 19 2013 to win the LeComte Stakes at Fair Grounds. Two days later Lucas is back in the winner's circle with Will Take Charge's victory in the Smarty Jones at Oaklawn Park. Both were ridden by Jon Court. Will Take Charge came back to run 6th in the Grade III Southwest Stakes February 18 2013. He made some headway against runaway winner Super Ninety Nine but was soundly beaten, leaving many punters scratching their heads as the field for the Rebel Stakes started to take shape. Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith was brought in to ride Oxbow and Jon Court stayed with Will Take Charge. Super Ninety Nine was sent off as the favorite and Oxbow was the second favorite. Will Take Charge was dismissed at 28/1. Each week brings a new leader to the Kentucky Derby Points Board; Will Take Charge has 60 points, his nearest rivals (Vyjack, Orb, Verrazano, Hear the Ghost) each have 50. Will Take Charge was bred by Eaton and has earned $545,371 for his owner Willis D. Horton, winning 3 of his 7 lifetime races. Drawing by Daily Racing Funnies ®.
