Description: The Santa Anita Derby is one of the longstanding, most important stepping stones on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. The year's renewal is Saturday April 6 2013. Last year we saw I'll Have Another use this prep race to capture the Roses. However, the Santa Anita Derby is not a race which brings about a Kentucky Derby winner, the last horses to win the Santa Anita Derby and go on to win the Kentucky Derby were Winning Colors (filly) in 1988 and Sunday Silence in 1989. And we would have to go back another decade to find Affirmed winning the Santa Anita Derby and go on to with the Kentucky Derby as well as the Triple Crown. The Santa Anita Derby is at 1 1/8 miles, carries a $750K purse, is a Grade I event, and offers 100 Kentucky Derby points to the winner, 40 points for 2nd, 20 points for 3rd, and 10 points for 4th. Can we expect another Santa Anita Derby winner to go on and win the Kentucky Derby?
There are a handful in here that are proven, and another handful that could be improving at the right time. Three year olds are notorious for 'blossoming' at the right time.
Power Broker (KY) CH , C, foaled February 15, 2010 (Pulpit - Shop Again, by Wild Again) was last seen in the 2012 Breeders' Cup Juvenile. He was carried extremely wide the entire trip and finished 5th about 5 1/4 lengths behind the winner, Shanghai Bobby. While Shanghai Bobby has not come back to show his dominance that he had shown in his 2 year old year, Power Broker has not come back at all. He has been given time off to develop and mature. His workouts indicate he is rounding into form and he should give a good account of himself in the Santa Anita Derby. Power Broker started twice in MSW then jumped into the Oak Tree Juvenile Turf at Santa Anita September 5 2012 in which he battled most of the one mile race to end up to be beaten by just a neck by Dry Summer. They brought him right back in the 1 1/16 miles Grade I FrontRunner Stakes at Santa Anita September 29 and he won by 6 1/2 lengths. He was the second betting choice behind Shanghai Bobby. Power Broker is 1 for 5 with one 2nd and one 3rd place finish, he has earned $242,600. He has10 points for his FrontRunner victory and would need to finish well to gain enough points to make the starting gate at Churchill Downs the first Saturday in May. Power Broker was bred by Jamm, Ltd. and is owned by Gary and Mary West. He is being trained by Bob Baffert and will be ridden by regular rider Rafael Bejarano in the Santa Anita Derby.
Flashback (KY) GR/RO, C, foaled April 12, 2010 (Tapit - Rhumb Line, by Mr. Greeley) has been lightly raced beginning with his MSW victory December 8 2012 at Hollywood Park, a win in the 1 1/16 miles $200K Grade II Robert B Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita February 2 2013, and a hard fought 2nd place finish behind a fast closing Hear the Ghost in the 1 1/16 miles $300K Grade II San Felipe stakes at Santa Anita March 9. Flashback is 2 for 3 with earnings of $207,000. He has 30 Kentucky Derby points and non restricted earnings of $180,000. Flashback was bred by William G. Andrade MD & Michael E. Hernon and he is owned by Gary and Mary West. He is trained by Bob Baffert. His regular rider was Julien Leparoux but gets a new rider for the Santa Anita Derby in Jockey Garrett Gomez.
Super Ninety Nine (KY) CH , C, foaled April 10, 2010 (Pulpit - Exogenetic, by Unbridled's Song) was favored to win the 1 1/16 miles $600K Grade II Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park March 16 2013. He battled most of the trip with Carve. When that one tired he had to contend with Oxbow and Den's Legacy down the stretch, he got squeezed at the 1/8 pole then backed out of it to finish 5th. Super Ninety Nine has 3 wins from 6 starts with one 2nd, he has earned $284,480, his SW Stakes victory was worth 10 Kentucky Derby points. He was bred by Northwest Farms LLC and he is owned by Tanma Corporation. Super Ninety Nine is trained by Bob Baffert, he will be ridden by Martin Garcia in the Santa Anita Derby.
Hear the Ghost (KY) CH , G, foaled February 4, 2010 (Ghostzapper - Rehear, by Coronado's Quest) won the 1 /16 miles $300K Grade II San Felipe Stakes March 9 2013 at Santa Anita. Hear the Ghost was the third betting choice behind favored Flashback and Goldencents. Jockey Corey Nakatani was able to stalk the leaders then pounce late as Flashback started to tire. Hear the Ghost won by 1/2 length. Goldencents was also a victim of being with the pace faded to be 4th. Hear the Ghost is 2 for 3 with one 2nd place finish. He has earned $222,400 and a total of 50 Kentucky Derby points (non restricted earnings of $195,400). He was bred by W. S. Farish and Lazy F Ranch and he is owned by Halo Farms and Hollendorfer, Jerry. Hear the Ghost is trained by Jerry Hollendorfer and he will be ridden by Corey Nakatani.
Goldencents (KY) B , C, foaled March 7, 2010 (Into Mischief - Golden Works, by Banker's Gold) was the second betting favorite to win the 1 1/16 miles $300K Grade II San Felipe Stakes as he fell victim to fast pace and finished 4th behind winner Hear the Ghost, the favorite Flashback, and Tiz the Minister. He was only beaten less than 3 lengths for the win, however. Trainer Doug O'Neil had I'll Have Another fit to win last year's Santa Anita Derby. Goldencents has won 3 of 5 starts with one 2nd place finish and has earned $800,000. He has 29 Kentucky Derby points and non restricted earnings of $758,000. Goldencents was bred by Rosecrest Farm & Karyn Pirrello and he is owned by W. C. Racing, Kenney, Dave and RAP Racing. Regular rider Kevin Krigger retains the mount.
