Description: The Road To The Derby racing calendar starts in the late summer of a two year Thoroughbred's life. Colts, geldings, & Fillies: The Kentucky Derby is open to all three year olds. The Derby field is limit to 20 starters. There is a point system in place to determine which 20 horses get a starting position. There are 35 races in the 'Road To The Kentucky Derby' series. There is a sliding point scale; the winner of the first 19 races on the Derby Prep Season earns 10 points, 4 points are awarded to the second place horse, 2 points for the show, and 1 point for the fourth place horse. The Prep Season schedule starts with the Grade III Iroquois Stakes run at 1 1/16 miles at Churchill Downs in early September and ends with the 1 1/16 miles Grade III Southwest Stakes run in mid-February at Oaklawn Park. The points system then moves into the 'Championship Series', eight races with a sliding scale of 50 points for 1st, 20 points for second, 10 points for 3rd, and 5 points for the fourth place horse. There are then 7 races which carry a sliding scale of 100-40-20-10. And finally, the 1 1/16 miles Lexington Stakes with a scale of 10-4-2-1. The Road To The Derby is a long and grueling one, indeed. Some horses get an early start in their 2 year old year, if they are ready. Others, may wait until there are into their 3 year old before they get on the 'Road'. In the case of a 'tie' on the the Leaderboard...'If two or more horses have the same number of points, which can often be the case whenever a point system is introduced, the tiebreaker to get into the Kentucky Derby or Kentucky Oaks will be earnings in non-restricted stakes races, whether they are graded or not'.
