Description: Nyquist (KY) B , C, foaled March 10, 2013 (Uncle Mo - Seeking Gabrielle, by Forestry) becomes the richest Thoroughbred to enter the Kentucky Derby with his win in the 9 furlong $1 million Grade I Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park April 2, 2016. Jockey Mario Gutierrez and Nyquist broke alertly to show the way into the first turn and up the back stretch. Sawyers Mickey and Chovanes applied pressure as they raced up the back stretch. Chovanes couldn't keep up, however, Sawyers Mickey went stride for stride with Nyquist as they rounded the far turn. Sawyers Mickey gave way as they turned for home and Mohaymen ranged up on the outside. At the top of the stretch it looked as if the battle lines were drawn, however, Nyquist went on with it and Mohaymen had no answer. Nyquist wins as he pleased by 3 1/4 lengths over Majesto. It was a length further back to Fellowship in 3rd and 4 more lengths back to Mohaymen in 4th. The first four finishers received Kentucky Derby Points on a scale of 100-40-20-10. Nyquist earned $589K for his victory making him the richest Thoroughbred to enter the Kentucky Derby. Nyquist also picked up the first ever $1 million bonus put up by Fasig-Tipton. Nyquist was a Fasig-Tipton March Two Year Old In Training Sales graduate last year. The bonus is awarded to a horse who was sold at the March Sale and goes on to win the Florida Derby. Nyquist is undefeated with 7 victories and has earned $3,322,600. Nyquist won the 2015 Eclipse Award for Outstanding 3 Year Old colt and also won the Grade I Breeders' Cup World Championship Juvenile last fall at Keeneland. He was purchased by owner Paul Reddam at that March Sale for $400K. Nyquist is being trained by Doug O'Neill. Drawing by Daily Racing Funnies ®.
