Description: Lani (KY) GR/RO, C, foaled February 22, 2013 (Tapit - Heavenly Romance (JPN), by Sunday Silence) earns his trip to the Kentucky Derby with a victory in the 1900 meter (about 9.5 furlongs) $2 million Group II UAE Derby March 26, 2016 at Meydan. Lani stumbled badly at the start, however, legendary Japanese jockey Yutaka Take gathered Lani quickly and went on their way trailing the field around the first turn. Vale Dori set the pace with On The Rocks applying pressure on the outside as they raced up the back stretch. As they approached the far turn Yu Change took the lead and Lani closed into the second spot, Vale Dori was along the rail in third. The undefeated filly, Polar River was desperately looking for racing room as they straightened for home, tried to go between horses and angled to the far outside to get after the leaders. Yu Change had the lead in deep stretch and Lani caught that one to win by 3/4 lengths over a surging Polar River. Yu Change was a 1/2 length behind Polar River for the show. Vale Dori was fourth. The first four finishers earned Kentucky Derby Points on a scale of 100-40-20-10. Lani arrived at Churchill downs April 3rd and he will be training up to the Kentucky Derby for the next five weeks at Churchill Downs. Lani would be only the second Japan-based horse to compete in the Kentucky Derby. The first was Ski Captain, who finished 14th in 1995 under Take, the jockey's lone Derby mount. Lani is 3-1-0 from 6 starts and he has earned $1,366,618. He was bred by North Hills Co. Limited, owned by Ms. Yoko Maeda, and he is being trained by Mikio Matsunaga.
