Description: Karakontie (JPN) B , C, foaled January 30, 2011 (Bernstein - Sun Is Up (JPN), by Sunday Silence) exploded down the stretch to win the 1 mile $2 million Grade I Breeders' Cup Mile on the turf course rated 'firm' at Santa Anita Park November 1, 2014. Karakontie was taken back to rate in mid pack by jockey Stephane Pasquier as Obviously was setting the fractions up front. Obviously looked to be having an easy time of it on the front end as he sprinted the first quarter in 21.95. Toronado was tracking him in second and as Obviously hit the half in 45.16 Toronado closed and went up to challenge around the far turn. They went 6 furlongs in 1:08.82 and turning for home Toronado blew the elbow and left Obviously with a four length lead at the 1/8 pole; Obviously seemed to be home free. However, Karakontie came running fast and got the lead in deep stretch to win by 1 length. Anodin made a nice run late to get second. Trade Storm and Summer Front also closed well. Trade Storm got the show by a nose over Summer Front, one length behind Anodin. Karakontie became the first Japan bred to winner a Breeders' Cup Championship race. He has a race record of 5-2-0 from 9 starts and he has earned $1,908,782. Karakontie has raced exclusively in France before coming to the Breeders' Cup. He is a home bred of Flaxman Holding's and he was trainer by Jonathan Pease. Drawing by Daily Racing Funnies ®.
