Description: Flashback (KY) GR/RO, C, foaled April 12, 2010 (Tapit - Rhumb Line, by Mr. Greeley) is owned by Gary and Mary West and he is 2 for 2 in his young career. He is a Derby hopeful for long time thoroughbred owners the West's. He has earned 10 points towards his berth the the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby the first Saturday in May. Besides Flashback's MSW win he won the 1 1/16 miles $200K Grade II Robert B Lewis stakes at Santa Anita February 2 2013. He was never tested in the 4 horse field, he led past every pole, he drew clear and won by 6 1/4 lengths. He has a few options for his next start, however, trainer Bob Baffert is not letting on to just where Flashback will resurface.

When speaking of the Kentucky Derby and Gary and Mary West we are reminded of Buddha (KY) GR/RO, H, foaled April 19, 1999 (Unbridled's Song - Cahooters, by Storm Cat) their Derby hopeful of 2002. After Buddha's 10th place finish in September of his 2 year old year, they gave him time off and brought him back in a MSW at Gulfstream Park in February 2002 and he ran off to win by 4 1/4 lengths. They brought him back in March and he ran off in an ALW winning by 9 1/2 lengths. Realizing they might have a super star on their hands the Wests set their sights on the Wood Memorial April 13 2009, run well in this race and the Derby would be next. Madaglia d'Oro with Laffit Pincay Jr and Pat Day on Buddha, it was those two setting the pace with Sunday Break and Gary Stevens sitting close in third. The order didn't change much, it was those 3 knocking heads the entire trip with Buddha prevailing by a head over Madaglia d'Oro, it was just another 1/2 back to Sunday Break in third. The Wests had a Derby contender. The day before the 2002 Kentucky Derby Buddha stepped on a rock in the shed row and sustained a serious injury to his left front leg and was retired.  Drawing by Daily Racing Funnies ®.
