Description: Classic Empire (KY) B, C, foaled March 21, 2014 (Pioneerof the Nile - Sambuca Classica, by Cat Thief), unfortunate to have lost the rider in the Grade I Hopeful Stakes in his last out, comes back strong to win the 8.5 furlong $500K Grade I Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland October 8, 2016. Jockey Julien Leparoux and Classic Empire broke well and sat off the pace set by Wild Shot. Blame Will kept the pressure on the front runner and Classic Empire tracked those two as they raced up the back stretch and into the far turn. Classic Empire ranged up on the outside as they were turning for home and drew off down the stretch to win by 3 lengths. Looking At Lee came from far back and closed strongly down the stretch to get the place. Wild Shot was a length further back for the show a head in front of No Dozing in fourth. Classic Empire is 3-0-0 from 4 starts and he has earned $285,920 for his owner John Oxley. He was bred by Steven & Brandi Nicholson and he is being trained by Mark Casse. The Futurity is a Breeders' Cup World Championships Challenge 'Win & You're In' Series race and Classic Empire earn a free start in the 2016 BC Juvenile November 5th at Santa Anita. The Futurity is also a Kentucky Derby Prep Season race and the first four finishers earn points towards a start in the 2017 Kentucky Derby May 6th at Churchill Downs.
